From Tabloid Punchline to Fresher's Essential: A Short History of UGGs on Campus

Somewhere between collecting the halls key and finding the nearest Aldi, there's a moment that has become as much a part of British freshers' week as the fire alarm going off on the first night: the realisation that half your new flatmates are wearing the same boots as you.

Chestnut Classics, lined up by the shoe rack like a uniform nobody officially agreed to. The UGG has become a genuine rite of passage for British students — but getting there was anything but a straight line.

The Era of the Sneer

Cast your mind back to the late 2000s. UGGs were everywhere and, simultaneously, everywhere a punchline. Tabloids and lads' mags treated them as shorthand for a certain kind of celebrity culture — the paparazzi shots, the sunglasses-indoors energy, the boot-with-juicy-tracksuit combination that a whole generation was told to be embarrassed by.

Plenty of people were. UGGs got shoved to the back of wardrobes, dismissed as a fad that had peaked with the noughties.

The Vintage Revival

Fast forward to today, and something remarkable has happened: Gen Z has reclaimed them wholesale. Driven by Y2K nostalgia, Depop culture and the simple truth that student halls are freezing, UGGs went from guilty pleasure to grail. On TikTok, the Classic Short is less a boot than a character in its own right.

The irony is delicious. The very generation that grew up seeing UGGs mocked online is the one that dug them out of their mums' wardrobes and made them cool again. There's a lesson in there about fashion cycles — and about never throwing anything away.

What's Actually Being Worn This Term

We asked around campuses from Leeds to Exeter, and the hierarchy is clear:

The Fresher's Buying Guide

Right then — you're living off a maintenance loan and a part-time shift at the campus bar. Here's how to get your pair without living on reduced pasta:

1. Buy once, buy well. A genuine pair should last your entire degree and beyond. Per-cost-per-wear, the pair you wear 200 days a year is the cheapest thing in your wardrobe.

2. Time your purchase. Prices dip outside peak season — late spring and summer are prime for deals on classic styles. Bookmark our deal guides and wait for the moment.

3. Go second-hand — seriously. Vinted and Depop are awash with pre-loved UGGs, often barely worn (student enthusiasm tends to outlast student budgets for the third pair, not the first). Check:

A second-hand Classic Short at £40–60 is arguably the best value in student fashion right now.

4. Know your size. UGGs run generously and are designed to be worn with bare feet — the sheepskin moulds to you. Size down rather than up; a baggy pair goes shapeless fast.

More Than a Boot

There's a reason the UGG endures on campus while other trends flare and die: it solves a real problem. Cold halls, early lectures, long library days, the walk home from the SU at midnight. Fashion that's also genuinely functional doesn't need ironic distance to survive.

So if you're a fresher reading this with a pair already in your suitcase — welcome. You've unknowingly joined a two-decade-old tradition. And if you're still on the fence, ask the person in the next room. Odds are they'll tell you it was the best £100 they spent all term.
