Slipper or Shoe? The Nation's Cosiest Argument, Finally Settled

Every family has its argument. Yours might be about the correct way to load a dishwasher, or whether a Jaffa Cake is a biscuit. Ours — the fashion writer's burden — is this: are UGGs slippers, or are they shoes?

It sounds flippant, but people hold genuinely strong views. Some wouldn't be seen dead popping to Tesco in their chestnut Classics. Others haven't worn "proper" shoes since 2019 and see no reason to start. Let's take this seriously, for once.

A Brief History of the Great Indoors

Here's the inconvenient fact for Team Shoe: UGGs started life as indoor footwear. Australian surfers in the 1960s and 70s pulled them on after cold-water sessions to warm their feet — post-slug, pre-kettle, essentially a heated hug for your toes. They were the original recovery slipper.

Then the story shifts. The boots crossed to California, got adopted by the chill-chasing crowd, and by the early 2000s they were being photographed on aeroplanes, red carpets and, eventually, high streets from Manchester to Brighton. Sheepskin didn't change. Context did.

So the purists have a point — but so does everyone who's ever walked to the corner shop in theirs. Footwear categories are blurrier than we pretend. Loafers started as slippers too, and nobody's demanding men remove theirs at the pub door.

The Evidence: A Street-Style Field Trip

We looked around, and the British public has already voted with its feet.

In Bath, on a drizzly Tuesday, we counted more UGGs than umbrellas along Milsom Street — paired with long wool coats, scarves and an air of total unbothered confidence. Nobody looked underdressed. Everybody looked warm.

In Glasgow, the boots have gone full fashion: platform Tazzes with tartan scarves, chunky minis with oversized denim, worn with the swagger of someone who knows exactly what they're doing.

In a Surrey village, meanwhile, a mother-of-three coordinated her UGGs with her daughter's, her dog's coat and her car's interior. That, right there, is a lifestyle, not a slipper.

The pattern is clear: outside of the actual living room, the UGG has been thoroughly normalised as outerwear. Fashion week agrees — sheepskin has appeared on proper runways season after season, styled with everything from slip dresses to tailoring.

The Case for Each Side

Team Slipper says: They're lined in wool. They're not waterproof. They were born indoors. Wearing them out is like wearing a dressing gown to Waitrose — technically possible, spiritually chaotic.

Team Shoe says: People wear suede desert boots through British weather without a whisper of complaint. Sheepskin regulates temperature in rain or shine. And a boot that's survived twenty years of high-street dominance has earned its outdoor citizenship.

Both sides, we note, are wearing them with socks they'd rather not discuss.

The Verdict (Unofficial, Deeply Held)

Here's our ruling: UGGs are house shoes — and that's precisely why they work as shoes.

The whole point of the UGG is that it collapses the boundary. It's the footwear equivalent of comfort food: technically acceptable in company, best enjoyed without apology. The modern UGG ranges — the Tazzes, the platforms, the weather-treated Classics — exist precisely because the brand leaned into outdoor life rather than running from it.

So wear them to the pub. Wear them on the school run. Wear them to a gallery, if you fancy. Just maybe invest in a waterproofing spray and keep a pair of dedicated slippers for the sofa, so your out-and-about boots don't end up smelling of Sunday roast.

The debate, like all the best British arguments, will never truly end. But you can wear whichever side you like — preferably with a long coat and a flat white.
